EVITA – Musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice; German lyrics by Michael Kunze
"Evita" premiered at London’s Prince Edward Theatre in 1978. This musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice recounts the moving life story of Maria Eva Duarte de Perón, who built a career first as a model and later as a radio personality and film actress. She rose to fame as the wife of Argentine leader Juan Perón. In 1946, Evita began her social advocacy for the *descamisados*—the "shirtless ones"—becoming a heroine to them. She died of cervical cancer at the age of just 33.
"Evita" is a musical about power, fame, and transience. It portrays how Eva Perón became an icon—indeed, almost a saint—revered by millions yet also subject to critical scrutiny, and how her untimely death cemented her status as a legend.
"Evita" is one of the most frequently performed musicals; this summer, audiences can experience it for the first time at Zwingenberg Castle, featuring a cast of top-class soloists, our festival and children's choirs, and an 18-piece orchestra.
